Cabhair - Irish Republican Prisoners Dependants Fund

Cabhair is a charitable organisation, solely dependant on public subscriptions. It was established in early 1987, following the revolutionary / reformist split in the republican movement, for "the relief of cases of distress arising out of republican activity".

Immediately followimg the Ard-Fheis of Sinn Féin in 1986 when the Provisionals departed from the Republican road a number of Irish political prisoners in England, the Occupied Six Counties and the 26 County Free State adhered to the revolutionary path and refused to accept support from the Provisionals.

To meet this pressing need CABHAIR was formed and has continued with this noble work. Prisoners that they have cared for have been released on completion of sentence and others have gone to prison. At no time since 1987 have no prisoners been in CABHAIR's care. As long as British rule continues in Ireland, Irish people will resist that foreign occupation and, unfortunately, there will be political prisoners.

CABHAIR currently supports Republican prisoners in Portlaoise prison in the 26 County Free State and Maghaberry prison in the Six Occupied Counties.

    Prisoners Maltreated in Maghaberry.
    28 Iúil / July 2009

Last Sunday, a Republican Prisoner in Maghaberry Gaol (Brian McAllister) dislocated his shoulder. As he was in severe pain, he requested medical help. However, this request was initially refused. The prisoner was placed in a wheelchair and brought into a room. He was kept there for around an hour and warned that if he kept on complaining then a search squad would be sent in to sort him out.

Eventually a doctor was brought in. The doctor they sent, however, was an eye specialist and was therefore unable to help. After another three hours he was removed to a Belfast hospital.

Another prisoner (Damian McKenna) was recently due a legal visit. This was delayed for nearly two hours, and eventually he was permitted just five minutes to speak to his solicitor. The legal visit had been due to last for two hours. He was told that he would be charged with assault, and in total seven solicitors were escorted from the gaol.

Damian along with two others (Seán McConville and Gary Toman) have spent 27 months in Maghaberry Gaol awaiting trial.

Republican Sinn Féin demands and end to the vindictiveness on the part of the screws, and also an end to the all too common obscene lengths of remands without trial.

    PoW Assaulted in Maghaberry Gaol.
    5ú Meitheamh/ June 2009

A Republican prisoner has been seriously assaulted in his cell in Maghaberry Gaol on Wednesday, 3rd June. Screws conducting a cell-search entered his cell at around 9a.m. and sought to take a bottle of shampoo along with other items. When the prisoner enquired whether he was no longer entitled to shower whilst in gaol he was badly beaten, and his hands and legs were bound. He was then brought to the punishment block and kept there for a number of hours.

This follows reports that security has been tightened in Maghaberry over the course of the past two months.

Republican Sinn Féin have also learnt that the man, who is badly bruised as a result of his ordeal, is to be charged before the Governor of Maghaberry Gaol in the morning with assault.

The RUC and the screws have a long history within the Six Counties of assaulting people, and subsequently charging the injured party with assault. A spokesman for RSF asked whether “perhaps they could avoid injury to themselves if they weren't using Republicans as punch-bags?”

“Brutality against Republican prisoners is not a thing of the past. It continues unabated in Maghaberry Gaol,” he added.

Event Held for Republican Prisoners in Lurgan.

A crowd of approximately 80 people braved the heavy rain to show their support for the Republican PoWs currently incarcerated in the Six Occupied Counties. A picket was held in Edward Street in Lurgan on Saturday, 10th May followed by a Rally.

A statement was read from the O/C of the Republican PoWs in Maghaberry Gaol. It read:

    “A chairde,

“It is an honour to address you here today. We salute you, the Republican people, our families and friends who support us as we continue our fight for Political Status. Previous attempts by the Brits and their puppets to criminalise us was met with the necessary resistance and this is still the case today.

“We continue to be punished for refusing to take drug tests in order to receive the same standards of education available to rapists and thugs. We have continually stated that we do not partake in the drug culture and refuse to seek to be labelled as enhanced prisoners. We are Prisoners of War and we will continue to oppose all attempts to criminalise us.

“In today's struggle we are being labelled as traitors and worse by Martin McGuinness and his colleagues, and by the continuation of the Brit black propaganda machine. This is an old British tactic formulated in London by MI5, and ably assisted in their work by our former comrades led by Gerry Adams. We are not the traitors. The former Republicans who sit in the bastion of Unionism and administer British rule are the real traitors to Ireland and her dead generations. They have turned their backs on the Republican Cause and have betrayed our Freedom Struggle. They have sought to renounce the right to wage war against the British, whilst falsely claiming the name Óglaigh na hÉireann. Adams and Co. do not own the rights to the Irish Republican Army, and we can assure them that the IRA remains alive and well and will continue to bring the fight to the British invaders.

“Internment has been reintroduced under a different name. We ask you to keep up the good work on our behalf and also on behalf of our comrades in Portlaoise. Our path is clear: Onward to a Free United Ireland! Onward to the Democratic Socialist Republic for which so many of our Comrades paid the supreme sacrifice.

“Beidh Ár Lá Linn. Tiocfaidh Ár Lá!”

Republican Sinn Féin Ard-Chomhairle member Fergal Moore then addressed the crowd. He said:

“We gather here today in solidarity with the Republican prisoners held in British Gaols and also in Portlaoise. In particular we think of those prisoners from North Armagh. Republican prisoners are being denied the political status which was won for them through much sacrifice. 28 years ago this week Bobby Sands died an agonizing death rather than allow Republicans to be labelled as criminals.

“Following the deaths of nine more of his comrades, political status was reinstituted in Long Kesh. However, this has all changed with the signing of the Stormont Agreement in 1998. We are told that the war is over and that there are no more political prisoners. Even some of those who were once considered Republicans have labelled Republican acts as criminal acts. The real crime is the continued occupation of Ireland by a foreign and hostile power. So long as this continues, history shows that there will be those who oppose it. Consequently there will be more Republican prisoners.

“We Republican outside the prison walls must organise effectively to protest the denial of political status inside Britain's Gaols. We must highlight the plight of the prisoners and build support for them amongst the general Nationalist population.

“Over the past couple of months we have witnessed the scale of the forces opposing Irish Republicanism. In Lurgan and Craigavon in particular, hundreds of RUC personnel sealed off communities and beat down doors – fighting children and wrecking homes in their quest for vengeance. Irishmen were taken from their homes and families on trumped up charges to wait for months or perhaps years for a show trial to commence. Internment is still with us comrades. But now it is known by the more palatable term of 'remand'.

“Some of those lifted were held for almost a fortnight before any charges were brought. Whilst RSF were calling for their immediate release, others were merely saying that they should be either charged or released. The Brits took the advice to heart and people were promptly charged. In no normal society would such situations be tolerated.

“Only in places that are occupied and ruled by oppressive regimes do these things happen. It would appear that so long as they are only oppressing Republicans then the Brits can do what they wish, and their paid servants in Stormont will cheer them on.

“The Brits and their friends have obviously never read any of Terence Mac Swiney, who said that 'Victory is not won by those who can inflict the most but by those who can endure the most.' Every door that is kicked in strengthens us. Every tear shed by an Irish mother fuels us. The Brits, through their actions, only make us more determined to succeed. They are making the weapons of their own destruction.

“We are here to show support for the Republican prisoners, but we are also here for another great and noble purpose – a purpose for which the prisoners would approve. We are here as part of the ongoing struggle for the All-Ireland Republic. Bobby Sands famously said that 'Everyone has his or her own part to play.' The prisoners are doing all that they can but what are we who are free doing?

“Coming here today, whilst important, is not going to free Ireland. Going to the graves of Tom Harte, Michael Crossey and their comrades – whilst worthy – is not enough. There is only one way that you can ensure that Ireland will be free. There is only one sure way to guarantee that the prisoners will be freed and that is if you join the Republican Movement to help defeat the British Occupation.

    “Victory to the Prisoners!

    “Victory to the Irish Republic!

    “An Phoblacht Abú!”

The proceedings ended with the singing of the National Anthem, Amhrán na bhFiann.

Easter Statement from Republican POWs, Maghaberry jail.

The following Easter Statement has been received from the Officer Commanding the Republican Prisoners of War in Maghaberry jail:

    A chairde,

It is a great honour that we - the Republican PoWs here in Maghaberry - have this opportunity once again to address you, the people of Ireland and abroad, on this the 93rd anniversary of the 1916 Rising. We, the PoWs, extend Easter greetings to our comrades, friends and supporters throughout the world, and would also like to thank RSF and CABHAIR for all the work done on our behalf. We extend special greetings to our families whose support is invaluable.

As you gather at the graves and monuments of Ireland's patriot dead you do so with great courage, unbowed and unbroken but mindful of the fact that the road ahead has never been harder. But as true Republicans we have never turned our backs on our struggle.

Like many generations before us we uphold the age-old desire of the Irish people for their self-determination free from the chains of a foreign oppressor. Over the past year we have see an increasing desire by the Provisionals and other pro-British parties to betray those striving to end British rule in Ireland.

These criminals are still trying to convince the world that accepting the continued occupation of our country and supporting the armed wing of the Crown (the RUC/PSNI) is the solution. But true Republicans will never accept this.

Far from advancing the cause of Irish unity, their sell-out has reinforced the partition of our country and reduced the Provos to being servants of the Crown. They have been lured into bed with the Brits - the same bed once occupied by the likes of Collins and de Valera.

None of this has come as a surprise. As Ruairí Ó Brádaigh, the President of Republican Sinn Féin, warned the Provos in 1986, the road they were taking was doomed. He told them that they “couldn't ride two horses going in opposite directions”, and that the path they chose would lead them into the path of the Brits. Once there they couldn't and wouldn't turn back - lured by the prospect of big salaries and power. They are now reduced to informing and administering British rule in Ireland. By doing so they have danced on the graves of those who have so bravely given their lives to remove the British presence from our shores, but Irish history has taught us that as long as there is British interference in Irish affairs, and the continued occupation of our country, there will always be resistance. This has again been seen in recent weeks with the successful military engagements directed at the Crown Forces.

In the aftermath of these military engagements we have seen the Provos calling on the people to inform the RUC/PSNI and stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the enemy to call these Volunteers traitors.

We, the PoWs, call on all people to reject the Provos, for it is they who are the traitors to Ireland and who are being paid to do the Brits dirty work. True Republicans are continuing to be arrested at the hands of the RUC/PSNI. They have now tried to detain Republicans for 28 days as was seen in recent weeks. This is internment by another name. When these Republicans challenged their detention and won the RUC/PSNI used the age old tactic of charge and remand - the conveyor belt in full motion. A number of Republicans from Armagh and other counties have been riding this British conveyor belt for almost two years now. All this on the word of faceless invaders, namely the SAS. At a time when the Provos are telling you that the RUC/PSNI are an acceptable police force they fail to mention the fact that Republicans are continuing to be arrested, harassed and their homes wrecked on a weekly basis.

We, the Republican PoWs, applaud those who took to the streets in protest at the detention of true Republicans. Once again we pledge our full support to the Leadership of Óglaigh na hÉireann and our comrades-in-arms who continue to fight for Irish freedom. We salute you.

We, the PoWs, continue to resist all attempts by the NIO to criminalise us and our struggle and with your continued support we are confident of victory. In the words of Liam Lynch “we have declared for a Republic and will live by no other law”.

    Continuity not compromise.

    Tiocfaidh ár lá.

    O/C Republican PoWs Maghaberry.

Statement from O/C Republican PoWs Maghaberry Gaol
    29 Eanáir/January 2009

The following statement has been received from the O/C of the Republican PoWs in Maghaberry Gaol:

"We, the Republican Prisoners of War incarcerated in Maghaberry prison camp for our beliefs and actions, wish to take this opportunity to inform you of the latest attempts by the Brits to criminalise those on the Republican wing in Roe House landings 3 & 4.

"The signing of the Stormont Agreement brought about an end to political status for political prisoners, including segregation. However segregation was reintroduced in 2003/4 after a number of PoWs were forced to embark on a dirty protest.

"At present the age-old policy of criminalisation is in full swing at the behest of the N.I.O. and their Provo puppets, aided by former members of the Provisional Movement who are now actively involved in criminal acts such as so-called “tiger kidnappings” for personal profiteering.

"Those who portray themselves as Republicans and yet freely engage in criminal acts such as “tiger kidnappings” solely for financial gain are not welcome on our wing and their presence will not be tolerated.

"Those who offer any form of protection to these people will be ordered to cease immediately or to leave the Republican wing.

"The concerns of Republican prisoners on Roe 3 and 4 are of a serious nature and must be treated as such not only by the prison authorities, but also those who offer mediation including Catholic clergymen, the “Independent Monitoring Board” and the Prisoners' Ombudsman in the Six Counties.

"Be under no illusion that we, the Republican PoWs, will no longer tolerate the presence of criminals or those who seek to criminalise us or our struggle on our wing.

"We wish to send a clear message to the N.I.O. and their Provo puppets that criminals will never be welcome on our wing.

"We are Prisoners of War. We cannot be broken or criminalised, and any such attempt will be met with resistance.

"Officer Commanding I.R.A. Prisoners, Maghaberry Gaol"

Republican Prisoner sentenced to solitary confinement in Co. Antrim Gaol.

    10ú  Lúnasa/August 2008

Republican Sinn Féin and the Republican Prisoners' Action Group have learnt that a Republican prisoner in Maghaberry Gaol, was sentenced last Thursday, 7th August, to seven days in solitary confinement. The prisoner had objected to an inappropriate search being conducted on his person last month.

A spokesperson said: “We oppose the excessive and invasive searches imposed upon Republican prisoners in Maghaberry on a frequent basis. The punishment meted out to this prisoner is also to be condemned. Although he is currently being held in solitary confinement, he is not alone as the thoughts of everyone committed to the Republican cause are with him at this time.”

    RSF remember Introduction of Internment.

      Lúnasa/August 2008

Republican Sinn Féin will be marking the anniversary of the reintroduction of internment in 1971 with pickets in Counties Antrim and Clare.

On Saturday, 9th August, a white-line picket will commence on the Falls Road in Belfast at 1:30p.m. A picket will also take place on the Clare Road in Ennis from 2p.m. Until 5p.m. Both pickets are being held in solidarity with Republican prisoners currently incarcerated in Maghaberry Gaol in County Antrim, who are seeking the restoration of political status.

These prisoners engaged in a ten-and-a-half month protest from June 2006. Their protest was suspended following assurances that the outstanding issues would be addressed.

Condemnation of Goggins plans for gaols.

    21 Iúil/July 2008

The proposal that all prisoners must submit to drug testing is in effect yet another attempt to criminalise Republican prisoners, said a spokesman for Republican Sinn Féin.

“Today’s announcement by Paul Goggins will not be welcomed by Republican PoWs in Maghaberry”, said Richard Walsh, Director of Publicity for Republican Sinn Féin and PRO of the Republican Prisoners’ Action Group.

“No Republican prisoner has ever been found to be in possession of illicit substances, nor have any of their visitors. Furthermore, drugs have never been found in the segregated régime in Maghaberry within which Republican prisoners are held.

“The suggestion that the use of the sniffer dogs will be increased is also unwelcome, as these have long been abused to create false ‘indications’ for the purpose of preventing open visits,” he said.

Picket for Republican prisoners in Kilkenny City.

    8ú Mí na Nollag/December 2007

Kilkenny Republican Sinn Féin held a very successful picket in Kilkenny city on Saturday December 8. The picket was held at the Town Hall on High St between 1pm and 2.30pm. Members of Kilkenny Republican Sinn Féin were joined by Republicans from Waterford, Wexford and Kildare.

Leaflets were handed out explaining the situation of the Republican prisoners in Maghaberry, whilst copies of the Republican paper SAOIRSE were sold. Addressing the crowd Republican Sinn Féin Vice President Des Dalton, Kildare, said that the Republican prisoners in Maghaberry were locked in a struggle to vindicate the right political status for which Bobby Sands and his comrades died on hunger strike in 1981.

"These rights, won on the back of the sacrifice of Republican prisoners since 1917 were signed away by the Provisionals in 1998 when they signed the Stormont Agreement, the Republican prisoners in Maghaberry are in a struggle against the latest attempt by Britain and native collaborators to criminalise Republican prisoners and by extension the historic struggle for Irish freedom," Des Dalton said.

The chairperson of Kilkenny Republican Sinn Féin Ger Foran said that as long as there was British rule in Ireland it would be met by resistance: "That is the lesson of Irish history, the fact that in 2007 there are Republican prisoners in Maghaberry and Portlaoise prisons testifies to this" he said.

Emmet Gladney, a member of the executive of Kilkenny Republican Sinn Féin said that Republican prisoners are in British and 26-County jails: "Because they refuse to recognise British courts, British laws, accept British money or British rule in any shape or form. They are in jail because they are loyal to the 32-county Irish Republic."

Prison Protest to be held on Falls Road.

    30 Mí  na Nollag/December 2007

The Republican Prisoners' Action Group (RPAG) will be holding a white-line picket on the Falls Road in Belfast on Saturday, 8th December, commencing at 1:30p.m. The picket is in support of the demands of Republican PoWs in Maghaberry Gaol for full PoW Status. A rally will follow outside the Belfast Office of Republican Sinn Féin on the Falls Road.

Republican PoWs in Maghaberry Gaol were engaged in protest action for more than ten months before agreeing a temporary suspension of their protest at the beginning of May. Their demands have not yet been met, and the RPAG urges the public to show their support for the restoration of full political status.

picket to highlight the ongoing campaign for in support of the right of the
Republican prisoners held in Maghaberry prison, Co Antrim, to political
    status.

The picket will take place at the Town Hall on the High street from 1.pm to
    2.30pm.

    Kilkenny Republican Sinn Féin

Brits must end vindictive tactics in Maghaberry.

Despite segregation being conceded within Maghaberry Gaol on the grounds of ensuring the Health & Safety both of segregated prisoners and their visitors, those visiting Republican POWs have been made to share transportation and waiting areas with well-known Loyalists housed on integrated landings. This makes a mockery of the implementation of the recommendations of the “Steele Report”. Ever since the introduction of segregation within Maghaberry the Brits and their screws have continued to act in bad faith.

Sniffer dogs have also recently been manipulated to prevent a visit from four people to a Republican POW – including his sister and young nephew. This came only a couple of weeks after another prisoner was placed in solitary confinement for a period of 48-hours, again owing to abuse of the sniffer dogs. The screws are well aware of the fact that Republican prisoners are completely opposed to the use of illicit drugs, and that none of their visitors have ever been found to be in possession of such substances. Neither have any been discovered within the prisoners' landings.

Ordinary people must stand up for the rights of the Republican prisoners in Maghaberry, and demand an end to the vindictive tactics of the prison authorities in the Six Occupied Counties.

    MAGHABERRY POWs REFUSE FOOD.

Whilst returning from a period of home release, the O/C of the Republican POWs in Maghaberry Gaol was put on the boards following a so-called 'positive' indication by sniffer dogs. On Friday 29th July he was placed in solitary confinement for a period of 48-hours. It is a well-known fact amongst the screws that he does not use any illicit drugs – nor have any drugs ever been found amongst Republican POWs or the area where they are housed.

Since the recent temporary suspension of their 10-month long protest action in Maghaberry Gaol against the conditions in which they are held, and for full political status, the screws have sought to aggravate the prisoners at every opportunity in an attempt to break their resolve. In their statement, the POWs made clear that the suspension should not be seen as a sign of weakness, but rather to give room for manoeuvre.

The Republican POWs in Maghaberry Gaol refused food over the 48-hour period that the O/C was held in solitary confinement. The Republican Prisoners' Action Group salutes the discipline and resolve of the Republican POWs in Maghaberry and condemns the vindictive nature of the actions of the prison authorities in the Six Occupied Counties.

White line picket held in Lurgan.

The R.P.A.G held a white line protest in Lurgan on Saturday 2 June, 2007 over 60 members turned out to support the P.O.Ws on Protest in Magaberry Jail over 900 leaflets were handed out and a lot of interest was shown by the passing public

Lurgan has been at the center of a heavy handed British Military Campaign over this past year a number of local Republicans have been arrested and held in Magaberry Prison on Trumped up charges with little or no evidence this is an effective form of internment without trial as these prisoners could beheld for up to 3 years it was also for these reasons that Lurgan was the venue for this protest

following the whit line protest people gathered for a Rally with Brendan McGill calling on the British to show us why these men were being held and said their incarceration was because they were true Republicans who would not bend the knee

A statement was read out on behalf of the Officer Commanding I.R.A Prisoners in Magaberry who condemned the attempt to criminalize Republican Prisoners by placing Criminals on the same wing as them and warned the British the Prisoners would resist the moves with everything at their disposal

Tony McPhilips gave the main Oration he said he was very glad and very proud to be addressing the Republican People in Lurgan and called on them to support the I.R.A Prisoners in Magaberry Jail and called on every one to help raise the Protest on the outside now the prisoners had temporally suspended their own

    The Protest

    * Thirty-eight Republican Prisoners currently imprisoned in Maghaberry Gaol.

    * "Controlled movement" is imposed on Republican landings with only three prisoners permitted out of their cells on the landing at any one time with each prisoner accompanied by two prison officers. Free Association on landings completely removed.

    * Legislation introduced by British government following the Good Friday Agreement removed the right of Republican prisoners to organise themselves on their own landings and removed the right of Republican prisoners to spend their time in prison constructively.

    * Prisoners made to chose between daily exercise or education. Prisoners denied educational facilities to enable them to organise their own education.

    * Easter lilies banned in the prison. Other Republican handicrafts confiscated and destroyed by prison officers.

    * PSNI/RUC approval required before prisoners permitted on Republican landing.

    * Republican prisoners’ parole entitlement has been reduced to half that of other prisoners.

    * Denial of compassionate paroles for family and religious occasions. Parole for funerals of immediate family members often restricted to 6 hours or less.

    * Constant use of strip searching to humiliate prisoners contrary to international law. One prisoner received 31 strip searches and 1,135 rub down searches in a six month period.

    The Catholic Church

For this past Year I.R.A Prisoners under their own command and directive have been on protest at the conditions they are facing in the British Prison Camp Magaberry lately that protest has been suspended as a show of good faith to the catholic hierarchy in Ireland who have said they are negotiating on the Prisoners behalf indeed a series of meetings with the Catholic church headed up by cardinal Brady and his team led to the prisoners taking this decision some movement was made by the brits on some of the prisoners 5 demands but a lot of key demands were not addressed

    British Criminalisation policy

For Hundreds of Years the British Government has tried to paint the struggle for Irish Freedom as criminal and at every turn Irish Republicans held in British jails have fought this criminalisation from Thomas Ash to Bobby Sands Irish Volunteers have Protested and died in British Prisons Fighting this Criminalisation there same tactics that failed in the past are today being used against the P.O.Ws in Magaberry some demands have been granted but the Brits are now using new tactics against the P.O.Ws criminals with no Republican links are now being placed on the Republican Wing in Magaberry Jail it is now reaching Crisis point with it looking like Republicans will have to share cells with common criminals this is another attempt to paint them as criminals Irish Republican Army Prisoners of War will use all forms of protest open to them to make sure this British Campaign stops

Urgent action required as segregated wings fill up - RPAG

The segregated wings in Maghaberry are quickly filling up, and regrettably a significant body of criminals have entered these wings. The Republican Prisoners' Action Group is concerned that Republican POWs may be forced to double-up with other prisoners in their cells, and if the Brits or those acting on their behalf in Maghaberry attempt to force the POWs to share cells with criminals they may be forced into taking some form of action in protest against such a distasteful policy.

We call on those concerned to ensure that there is no attempt to implement such a foolhardy policy within the gaol. The refusal on the part of the prison authorities to allow Republican prisoners to organise their own landings has led to this situation arising.

The prisoners have demonstrated generosity on their part in agreeing to a temporary suspension of of the latest phase of their protest for political status last week. However they also made it clear that the suspension should not be viewed as a sign of weakness, and that any foot-dragging on issues pertaining to better living conditions for the prisoners will not be tolerated.

MAGHABERRY POWs ANNOUNCE SUSPENSION OF PROTEST

Statement from O/C CIRA POWs in Maghaberry Gaol

The Republican Prisoners held in Maghaberry Concentration Camp have agreed to temporarily suspend their 10-month long protest. Since 19th June 2006 Republican POWs have been protesting against a régime which seeks to criminalise those who continue to struggle for Ireland's Freedom. Throughout the long months of protest representatives of the POWs have held meetings with various organisations including the hierarchy of the Catholic Church: indeed Archibishop Seán Brady visited the prison and spoke directly with the O/C of the prisoners on protest. During these meetings the Church representatives appealed to the prisoners to suspend their protest in order to allow them to enter discussions on the prisoners' behalf. Whilst the POWs demanded direct talks between their O/C and the Brits it was then decided not to escalate the protest. The decision to suspend the current phase of protest was taken after the Leadership of Óglaigh na hÉireann were informed by the Gaol O/C.

Whilst there have been some changes implemented to improve conditions since this decision we believe that they only partially meet our demands.

    The following are the changes:

    ·         Access to classroom for self-education

    ·         Inter-wing football

    ·         Access to dining room for breakfast and dinner on a rotational basis

    ·         More time out of cell resulting in a 16-hour and 19-hour lock-up as opposed to the previous 19 and 23-hour lock-ups

Although we must acknowledge that significant change has been made we believe that a lot more needs to be done.

We have only agreed to a temporary suspension in order to show that we are not intransigent; we will not accept the continuation of any policy which seeks to criminalise Republican POWs. We would urge the NIO and the Brits not to view our suspension as a sign of weakness, but rather as a sign that we are willing to give room for manoeuvre – the room that was requested from us by intermediaries. We wish to restate that we will not tolerate any more foot-dragging on the issues pertaining to better living conditions. We will not allow the status quo to remain for a further 3 years without more significant change. The ball is again in the Brits' court.

    Maghaberry Gaol

RPAG condemns Brit prison policy on Easter Lillies.

The Republican Prisoners Action Group condemns the news that several republican POWs in Maghaberry Gaol have been charged under prison rules for the wearing of the Easter Lily. Archbishop Sean Brady visited the gaol and assured the prisoners that he would do whatever he could to secure a resolution to the ongoing protest in Maghaberry. Clearly he has not been effective in that regard.

The Republican POWs have refused to eat food in their cells, which contain a toilet, on hygiene grounds since the commencement of their protest on June 19th of last year. If the POWs are sent to the boards as punishment then they will be without any food for the duration of this punishment.

It must also be stated that the screws are free to wear poppies on segregated Republican landings. This contradiction must be resolved, and the Republican POWs who have suffered the loss of their liberty owing to their principled opposition to English rule in Ireland must be allowed to honour Ireland's patriot dead.

We would also ask the Provos – who have been very vocal in calling for people to wear the Easter Lily, despite their policy U-turns – to publicly support the Prisoners of War in Maghaberry to this end.

R.P.A.G. PROTEST HELD IN CASTLEWELLEN,  CO. DOWN.

The Republican Prisoners action group held a successful protest yesterday in Castlewellan Co Down. Protestors from over the 6 counties and local activisits took to the streets to continue the support campaign for the Republican Prisoners in Magaberry Jail.

Those prisoners have now been on protest from July while the media hides from the subject. The Republican Prisoners Action Group has been to the front in highlighting the on going prison protest, we have taken the protest to every occupied county of the North.

There have been continuing solidarity protests and information events through out Ireland the U.S & Europe. There has also been a large number of events held in Scotland by the Glasgow R.P.A.G., who continue to put in a lot of work.

The R.P.A.G. is in contact with the Prisoners each week and it has been said by the Prisoners through their Officer Comanding, that the R.P.A.G. is the Voice for the Prisoners on protest.

We call on every Republican who support the Protesting Prisoners, to contact and help the R.P.A.G. become more successful in promoting the prison issues. We ask Republicans to join the R.P.A.G and help reinstate the P.O.W Status won at such a heavy price by Bobby Sands and his brave Comrades.

The local people of Co Down responded well to the protest. Over 1000 leaflets were handed out. Many people did not know the Prisoners were protesting, this is the biased work of the local and national media. Help us smash this black out. Join Now.

PROVOS/RUC FILM PRISON PROTEST IN DUNGIVEN.
    February 18, 2007

At a rally held on Saturday in Dungiven, Co. Derry, in support of the five demands of the Republican POWs on protest in Maghaberry Gaol, both the Provos and the RUC were observed filming and photographing the proceedings. The rally had been arranged by the Republican Prisoners' Action Group, and called for full political status for the Republican prisoners. This had been signed away under the terms of the 1998 Stormont Agreement.

A white-line picket was held on the Main Street in Dungiven, and received a great response from passing motorists. However people inside the Provos' office on the Main Street were seen taking photos and videos of the protesters. The RUC soon arrived on the scene and took over this duty.

Following the picket, a rally was held. Richard Walsh, Derry, chaired the proceedings. He reminded those present that the Republican POWs had been on protest since the 19th June against the appalling conditions in which they are held. Mr. Walsh also informed those present that “traitors in a certain office across the street are taking photographs of us, but they needn't have bothered as their handlers are present to do this job for them.” He then introduced Tony McPhillips, Co. Fermanagh, who stated that March 7th provided an opportunity to reject the RUC and British Crown Forces, and to stand by the All-Ireland Republic.

Michael McGonigle, Dungiven – the Republican Sinn Féin candidate for East Derry, who had previously served on Limavady District Council – told those present that a No. 1 vote for him would be a vote against the Crown Forces, and a vote against English rule in Ireland. He added that he was the only abstentionist Sinn Féin candidate standing in East Derry.

The Republican Prisoners' Action Group endorses the campaigns of all six Republican Sinn Féin candidates (standing in East Derry; Mid-Ulster; Fermanagh/South Tyrone; West Tyrone; West Belfast and Upper Bann) in the forthcoming Assembly election.

We also call on the Provos to publicly comment on the actions of their friends – both inside the Provo office and the RUC Barracks.

  • CELTIC FANS LEAFLETED.

On Saturday 10th of February, members of the Glasgow branch of the Republican Prisoners’ Action Group distributed over a thousand leaflets to fans going into Celtic Park at the Springfield Road and Janefield Street entrances to the ground. The leaflets publicised the ongoing prison protest by the Republican POWS in Maghberry Gaol who are campigning for the restoration of political status and better conditions. The response from the fans was very encourgaing with several people stopping to ask about the protest and taking leaflets to distribute in their local areas.

Republican Prisoners Speak Out Against Misrepresentation.

    Prisoners Supported by Cabhair.

    A chara,

It has come to our attention that our names are being used on websites by people not affiliated with our Movement. We want to make it absolutely clear that our dependants and ourselves are being helped by CABHAIR and CABHAIR only.

We do not want our names admitted to other websites by those whose aims are to make it look like they are financially supporting us and also just to cause confusion with genuine contributors at home and abroad for their own financial gain.

If there is anything we needed or encouragement for people to send Christmas cards, birthday cards, etc. it will be CABHAIR who will act on our behalf and it is only CABHAIR we want to act on our behalf.

This shows the lengths that disgruntled elements will go to, as they see no boundaries in their actions.

We urge other Republicans being misrepresented in the same way to highlight and clarify such deplorable actions as these people executing such acts are doing a disservice to the genuine men and women seeking to help prisoners.

    GLASGOW R.P.A.G WEEKEND OF ACTION.

On 20 January, as part of its ongoing campaign to publicise the plight of the protesting Republican POWs in Maghaberry Gaol, activists from the RPAG leafleted marchers attending the annual Bloody Sunday demonstration in Glasgow organised by Cairde na hEireann. In the afternoon a dozen RPAG activists handed out two thousand leaflets to Celtic fans going into the ground. On the following day the RPAG leafleted all of the several hundred participants on the West of Scotland Band Alliance march in Glasgow that was also organised to commemorate Bloody Sunday.

Glasgow RPAG spokesman, Antoin Mac Piarais commented, “The campaign in support of the 5 just demands of the prisoners is gaining momentum. We are very encouraged by the positive response we have received from the Irish community. There is a real concern that the Brits must not be allowed to continue in their efforts to isolate and criminalise the POWs. People remember the Hunger Strikes of 1980 and ’81 and can hardly believe that Republican prisoners are being denied political status today”.

Anyone interested in joining Glasgow RPAG and attending the monthly planning meetings should send an email to glasgowrpag@yahoo.com or phone 07867996246.

GLASGOW & CORK R.P.A.G. CALL FOR THE REPATRIATION OF NOEL MAGUIRE.

At our meeting today, the members of the Glasgow branch of the Republican Prisoners’ Action Group agreed unanimously to support the repatriation to the Free State of Noel Maguire who is the only remaining Irish political prisoner still incarcerated in an English jail. We are concerned for the health and well being of Noel who despite having family in the 26 Counties has been refused repatriation.

Glasgow RPAG agreed to send letters of protest to the Free State Department of Foreign Affairs and the Minister for Justice calling for them to reconsider their decision on the refusal to accept Noel Maguire’s repatriation so that he can be closer to his loved ones. We urge people to show their solidarity with Noel by writing to him c/o HMP Full Sutton, Stamford Bridge, York, YO41 1PS, England.

Cork RPAG at there last meeting decided unanimously to support the Glasgow RPAGs call for the immediate repatriation of Noel Maguire. We call on the wider republican community and people in general to show support. Write now to Noel and send letters of protest to the Free State Department of Foreign Affairs and Minister for Justice calling for his repatriation to the 26 Counties..

REPUBLICAN SINN FÉIN PICKET PORTLAOISE PRISON.

THE Republican Sinn Féin POW Department placed a picket on Portlaoise prison on Saturday, January 20 to coincide with a 24-hour fast by the Republican prisoners in Portlaoise. The fast by the Republican prisoners was in solidarity with the Republican prisoners in Maghaberry prison, outside Belfast, where the prisoners have been engaged in a protest campaign since June 2006 to secure their right to political status. More than 30 people from Wexford, Kilkenny, Kildare, Limerick and Dublin were in attendance.

From the beginning of the protest in Maghaberry prison the Republican prisoners in Portlaoise have been holding one 24-hour fast on a weekly basis, alternating the days each week. The purpose of the picket by the Republican Sinn Féin POW Department was twofold, to publicly the thank the Portlaoise POWs for their act of solidarity with the POWs in Maghaberry and to bring to public attention the ongoing struggle by the Republican prisoners in Maghaberry prison for their right to political status, a right which was established due to the sacrifice of Bobby Sands and his nine fellow hunger strikers in the H Blocks of Long Kesh in 1981.

In 1998 the Provisionals in signing up to the Stormont Agreement signed that right away and lent their support to the British government’s criminalisation of Republican prisoners and by extension the ongoing struggle for Irish freedom. The Portlaoise picket was part of a nationwide campaign in support of the Maghaberry Republican POWs in rejecting this latest attempt by the British government to label “Ireland’s fight 800 years of crime.”

REPUBLICAN SINN FÉIN TO PICKET PORTLAOISE PRISON.

The Republican Sinn Féin POW Department will be placing a picket on Portlaoise prison on Saturday, January 20 between 2pm and 4pm. The picket is being held to coincide with a 24-hour fast by the Republican prisoners in Portlaoise. The fast by the Republican prisoners is in solidarity with the Republican prisoners in Maghaberry prison, outside Belfast, where the prisoners have been engaged in a protest campaign since June 2006 to secure their right to political status.

From the beginning of the protest in Maghaberry prison the Republican prisoners in Portlaoise have been holding one 24-hour fast on a weekly basis, alternating the days each week. The purpose of the picket by the Republican Sinn Féin POW Department is twofold, to publicly the thank the Portlaoise POWs for their act of solidarity with the POWs in Maghaberry and to bring to public attention the ongoing struggle by the Republican prisoners in Maghaberry prison for their right to political status, a right which was established due to the sacrifice of Bobby Sands and his nine fellow hunger strikers in the H Blocks of Long Kesh in 1981.

In 1998 the Provisionals in signing up to the Stormont Agreement signed that right away and lent their support to the British government’s criminalisation of Republican prisoners and by extension the ongoing struggle for Irish freedom. POW PICKET AT BRITISH EMBASSY IN DUBLIN.

THE POW Department of Sinn Féin Poblachtach organised a picket held at the British Embassy in Dublin on December 16 in support of the protesting POWs in Maghaberry jail, Co Antrim.

Members and supporters came from Dublin, Kildare and Kilkenny. Banners and posters alerted passing motorists to the plight of the POWs and leaflets were handed to pedestrians outlining the conditions in the prison and the five demands of the POWs. A very good response was received from passers-by.

As usual the Special Branch kept a watchful eye on the protestors. The protestors all agreed that two cars of Special Branch could be better employed on a Saturday afternoon than sitting in their cars videoing the protest and harassing Republicans. The youth were again targeted by the Branch and one young man was put into the Branch car before protestors approached the car and he was released immediately.

His pockets were emptied and he was searched in the usual ignorant way of the Special Branch who refused to say under what section the young man was being searched. Their usual tactic of surrounding an individual - designed to intimidate ? did not work as they were outnumbered.

The protestors called for the immediate granting of political status for the protesting prisoners in Maghaberry jail. Details of the conditions/demands can be had HERE on this page or at http://saoirse.info/ and at http://www.freewebs.com/powstatusnow/.

December is traditionally the month that collections are taken up for the prisoners dependants. Anyone wishing to contribute should send donations to CABHAIR at 223 Parnell Street, Dublin 1. The Christmas swim will take place in the canal opposite the Black Horse Inn, Inchicore, Dublin at 12 noon on Christmas day.

On January 20, 2007 a POW picket will be held at Portlaoise prison.

MAGHABERRY POW PROTEST TAKES PLACE IN DERRY CITY.

Following on from a protest in Newry a fortnight ago, a large protest was held in Derry City on Saturday, 16th December. The month of December traditionally represents the prisoners' month, and this protest - organised by the Republican Prisoners' Action Group (RPAG) - was in support of the demands of the Republican POWs currently on protest in Maghaberry Gaol. Approximately 100 protestors turned out for the event on Shipquay Street, as did no less than twenty armed members of the British Colonial Police.

The RUC were in possession of still cameras and video cameras, and photographed and videographed those present. Special attention was given to young people who turned out in support of the Republican POWs. Passers-by and shoppers were also subjected to this harassment.

The protest was well-received by the public, and a large number of leafelts were distributed.

After the white-line picket a rally was held in Guildhall Square. The RUC secured the collaboration of NCP traffic wardens in an unsuccessful bid to have vehicles owned by Republicans clamped.

Michael McGonagle of Dungiven, Co. Derry, chaired the proceedings. He said that "unfortunately there will continue to be prisoners for as long as the British remain in Ireland." He then introduced the main speaker - Cathleen Knowles McGuirk, Vice-President of Republican Sinn Féin, who stated that "as the Normans had been described as 'more Irish than the Irish themselves', the Provos have now become more Unionist than the Unionists themselves." She added that "six months on from the beginning of the protest there is an onus on everyone to ensure that it is brought to a victorious conclusion."

National Spokeman for the RPAG, Tony McPhillips, Co. Fermanagh, said he "would like to pay tribute to the RUC for showing the people of Derry that they have not changed. They remain a Crown police force tasked with enforcing British rule in Ireland."

Richard Walsh, Derry - PRO of the RPAG and a member of the Ard-Chomhairle of Republican Sinn Féin - stated that "we are all well aware that the RUC are the terrorists, and British Occupation is the crime. Republican POWs will never allow themselves to be criminalised, and history shows that whilst English rule continues in Ireland, so too will Republican resistance to it." He also announced that the RPAG had a website which could be viewed at http://www.powstatusnow.net

The proceedings finished with the playing of the National Anthem, Amhrán na bhFiann.

P.O.W. PROTEST TO BE HELD IN DERRY.

A white-line picket will be held on Saturday, December 16th, on Shipquay Street in Derry City opposite the Guildhall, starting at 2:00p.m. This will be followed by a rally. The protest has been organised by the Republican Prisoners' Action Group (RPAG) in support of the Republican POWs in Maghaberry Gaol who have been on protest for almost six months against the appalling conditions in which they are held.

The POWs have been on protest since June 19th, with five stated demands.

The main speaker will be Cathleen Knowles McGuirk, Vice-President, Republican Sinn Féin. Protests in support of the POWs and their demand for full political status will have then been held in each of the Six Occupied Counties. The RPAG calls on everyone to stand behind the POWs and reject the failed British attempts at criminalisation of the Republican POWs and, by extension, the Cause of Irish Freedom.

    PRISON PROTEST HELD IN NEWRY.

A white-line picket in support of the protesting POWs in Maghaberry was held in Bridge Street in Newry, Co. Down, on Saturday, 2nd December. It was organised by the Republican Prisoners' Action Group (RPAG). A large number of leaflets were distributed, and passing motorists displayed their support. Following the picket a rally took place nearby.

Ruairí White, Newry, chaired the proceedings. He introduced Richard Walsh, Derry - the PRO of the Republican Prisoners' Action Group and a member of the Ard-Chomhairle of Republican Sinn Féin - who was the main speaker on the day.

Mr. Walsh outlined the ongoing protest of the Republican POWs and their five demands. They have been on protest since the 19th June. He added: "Political status was signed away by former Republicans under the terms of the Stormont Agreement in 1998. However, the POWs have made it clear that they will never allow themselves to be criminalised by traitors or anyone else." Referring to the recent decision by the Provos to nominate to a policing partnership in Dublin, he stated that the 26-County police were renowned for their harassment of Republicans. "Furthermore, this is clearly a move in the direction of seeking endorsement for the RUC. They may have changed their name and their emblems, but their primary function is still to serve as the first line of defence for English rule in Ireland. They will continue to imprison Republicans or kill them. Regardless of what the Provos say or do, the only attitude of true Republicans to the British Colonial Police is one of eternal hostility", he continued. Mr. Walsh concluded by saying that everyone had a duty to ensure that the current protest was brought to a successful conclusion, and that the demands of the POWs were conceded.

An Cathaoirleach then introduced the National Spokesman for the RPAG - Mr. Tony McPhillips of County Fermanagh. Mr. McPhillips stated that "one of the most important words to Republicans is 'continuity'". He also called for support of the POWs, and stated that another protest would be held by the RPAG in Shipquay Street, Derry City at 1:30p.m. on Saturday, 16th December. "We will then have held a protest in each of the Six Occupied Counties", he added.

SCOTTISH TRADE UNION CONGRESS MARCH AGAINST RACISM.

On Saturday 25th November there was a colourful display of tricolours on the large Irish section of the annual Scottish Trade Union Congress march against racism in the centre of Glasgow. Placards were carried calling for an end to Irish racism by the political establishment which has imposed a ban on a pro Irish march in Ayr and Coatbridge, and resorts to anti sectarian legislation to harass and demonise Irish political activists.

The banner of the Glasgow based Francis Hughes Cumann of Sinn Fein Poblachtach was carried and activists from the R.P.A.G. handed out leaflets to publicise the ongoing Prison Protest in Maghaberry by the Republican P.O.W's for the restoration of political status.

In the afternoon the Revolutionary Communist Group held a successful event on the theme of ‘1981 – The Irish Hunger Strike and British Imperialism’. It comprised the showing of the film H3, a display of literature and memorabilia related to the Hunger Strikes and a panel of speakers followed by a discussion.

Speaking on behalf of Sinn Fein Poblachtach, Stephen Coyle explained how the events of 1981 politicised a large section of working class youth from Irish backgrounds and led to the development of a significant solidarity campaign capable of mobilising thousands of people onto the streets of Scotland’s main towns and cities. He went on to give a Republican perspective of the so called peace process which is doomed to failure because it ignores the essence of the problem, namely Britain’s illegal and immoral occupation of the 6 Counties and the denial of all Ireland democracy to the Irish People.

He also called on people to campaign in support of Political Status for the P.O.W's by joining the R.P.A.G. Michael McGregor spoke of the need for the left to show principled solidarity with the Irish struggle in the same way that Marx and Engels did in the 1860s and later by John MacLean in the 1920s through his successful Hands off Ireland campaign. Paul Mallon of the R.C.G. analysed the aftermath of the Hunger Strike from an anti imperialist perspective and described it as a defeat in view of the subsequent transformation of the Provisional organisation into a constitutional reformist body which has become part of the bourgeoise political establishment.

REHASHED DOCUMENT FUTILE EXERCISE - R.P.A.G.

Republican POWs held in segregated conditions in Maghaberry have been engaged in an ongoing protest since the 19th June 2006. The British Government and the Prison Service in the Six Counties are well aware of their five demands.

The POWs commenced this protest as they felt all other avenues open to them had been exhausted. The Prison Service’s statement of the 16th November appears to be based on the Separated Regime Review published in May 2006. The Review failed entirely to address the major issues concerning the plight of the POWs, and nothing of significance is contained in this latest statement.

Any attempt to rehash a document which only solidified the belief amongst the POWs that representations made on their behalf were being ignored is futile. The British Government and their Prison Service are playing a dangerous game with the health and safety of the POWs and should instead seek to resolve the real issues and concede the POWs’ five demands.

GLASGOW RPAG LEAFLETING OUTSIDE CELTIC PARK.

On Saturday 18th of November, members of the Glasgow branch of the Republican Prisoners’ Action Group distributed over a thousand leaflets to fans going into Celtic Park at the Springfield Road and Janefield Street entrances to the ground. The response from the fans was positive and seven new members were signed up.

As part of an ongoing campaign of harassment by Strathclyde Police against Irish Republicans outside the ground, a member of Sinn Fein Poblachtach who was selling SAOIRSE and distributing RPAG leaflets had a leaflet and copy of the paper confiscated and his personal details taken. The incident has been logged with a solicitor. The Glasgow branches of RSF and RPAG refuse to be intimidated and will continue to publicise the Prison Protest in Maghaberry outside Celtic Park.

    DUNGANNON WHITE LINE PROTEST.

The Republican Prisoners Action Group www.politicalstatusnow.net held a very successful white line protest on Saturday November 18th in Dungannon over 60 supporters of the Irish Republican P.O.Ws currently on Protest in Magaberry Gaol turned up and showed their support .

Over 1000 leaflets were distributed to the local people in Dungannon, with many asking questions and saying they had no idea that their was a protest under way in Magaberry. They were astounded when told that a large number of Republican Prisoners were protesting for the same rights won for Republican Prisoners by the Hunger Strikers of 1981. They could not believe that Former Republicans could simply sign away those rights that were gained with such high a price.

The local R.U.C/P.S.N.I were out in force and used every opportunity to harass and intimidate the Protesters.

When the white line protest ended a large crowed gathered for the Public information. Republican Prisoners Action Groups National Spokesperson Tony McPhilips said that the Prisoners were fully committed to seeing their protest through to a successful conclusion, but stressed that the protest was nearing a new and more confrontational stage. He said that Republican P.O.Ws had tried to resolve this issue with the Prison service and had failed and that the Prisoners would use every form of protest available to them. He also stressed that the media blackout of the protest, along with the British Government and others ignoring the Prison Protest, hoping that it would just go away was just helping to escalate matters.

Former East Tyrone Brigade Commander and 1980 Hunger Striker Tommy McKearney to spoke from the platform saying that this type of Conflict has been repeated through out the British-Irish Conflict. That restrictions placed on Republican Prisoners in Magaberry were not for security reasons nor indeed were they called for, they were imposed as a punishment on these prisoners to keep the prison services supporters happy. He called the regime in Magaberry totally unjust, an abuse of the prisoners human rights, and that people here today should be applauded for taking to the streets in support of those Prisoners held in these inhumane conditions.

Local media and TV attended the event.

POW PICKET HELD IN ARMAGH CITY.

A white-line picket for political status took place in Armagh City on Saturday, 28th October. The protest was organised by the Republican Prisoners’ Action Group (RPAG). A large number of leaflets were handed out to passing motorists, outlining the situation faced by Republican POWs in Maghaberry Gaol. The picket was well received by the people of Armagh.

The RUC made their presence felt during the picket and – aided by their DMSU (Divisional Mobile Support Unit) – sought to disrupt the protest. They were also observed photographing those present.

Republican POWs have now been on protest in Maghaberry for more than four months. The RPAG has planned further protests throughout the country to highlight the plight of the Prisoners of War.

HARASSMENT ENDURED AS POWs’ PLIGHT HIGHLIGHTED

On Friday, 13th October a day of action was held by the Republican Prisoners’ Action Group (RPAG) to increase awareness of the plight of the Republican POWs in Maghaberry Gaol.

Due to a concerted campaign of censorship in the media, members of the RPAG travelled to the offices of UTV in Belfast to deliver a statement highlighting the plight of the POWs and detailing their continuing protest for political status. However there was a large RUC presence assembled outside UTV to prevent entry. Nonetheless, the statement was read and subsequently handed to a UTV staff member. An hour-long picket was held outside.

RPAG members were also present at St. Andrew’s in Scotland, carrying a large banner. They were later met by a delegation to discuss the issues surrounding the Maghaberry protest, which has been ongoing since the 19th June. As they attempted to leave Scotland they were detained for a period of two hours under Schedule 7 of the so-called "Terrorism Act". It would appear that the purpose of this harassment was to cause them to miss their boat home.

A leafleting campaign took place in Dublin, and other events occurred throughout the country. An information campaign also took place in the United States.

Almost four months on from the start of the protest in Maghaberry it is imperative that anyone with influence exerts this to resolve the situation, which is hurtling towards crisis point.

MI5 SWOOP ON RPAG PROTESTORS IN SCOTLAND.

The Members of the Republican Prisoners Action Group who attended the Protest for the P.O.Ws outside the Talks in St Andrews were arrested by Armed members of the Special Branch and MI5 as they entered the Docks to get the boat home they were held and questioned for two hours long enough for them to miss the boat home they were told that if it had been known they were coming they would have spent the duration in Paddington Green Maximum Security interrogation Centre

The R.P.A.G condemns this action by the British Intelligence Forces and points out that these men's Protest was a Peaceful one and went of with out incident it shows that the British government is imposing a Soviet style censorship campaign against anyone they do not politically agree with these actions by the British state only help us in showing to the world the conditions which our Prisoners are forced to endure if the British Government has nothing to hide then why were these men subject to this Harassment

The R.P.A.G would like to thank everyone who took part in today's Protests in Belfast the Protest outside UTV made the news their were also the protests in St Andrews and Protests were held outside the GPO in Dublin and also in Cork City and tomorrow Members of the National Irish Freedom Committee will Show their Solidarity with the P.O.Ws by Protesting outside the British Consulate in New York

Protest held in Cork in support of Republican Prisoners.

The Prison Protest by Republican POWs was highlighted when members of the MacCurtain/McSwiney Cumann, R.S.F. Cork and R.P.A.G. (Republican Prisoners Action Group) turned out at 3pm on Friday October 13th at Daunt Square in Cork for a vigil to highlight the continuing attempts at the criminalisation of Republican Prisoners in Maghaberry.

Hundreds of leaflets were handed out, highlighting the present conditions in Maghaberry and the continuing protest for Political Status, which after been won by the sacrifices of ten brave men in 1981 has been removed by the British Government and those who signed the failed 1998 Good Friday Agreement.

The reaction from passers by was positive.

Republican POW’s in Maghaberry have been engaged in a prison protest since 19th June 2006.  They are protesting to improve conditions for segregated prisoners in Maghaberry who are in effect being punished for exercising their right to segregation from non-political prisoners.  They are demanding that their 5 demands be addressed.

    1. RIGHT TO FREE ASSOCIATION
    2. END TO CONTROLLED MOVEMENT
    3. RIGHT TO FULL TIME EDUCATION
    4. SEPARATE VISITING FACILITY
    5. RIGHT TO ORGANISE OUR OWN LANDINGS

The POW’s are relying on the Irish people to stand with them in their fight to improve conditions and ultimately to win back Political Status.  The Irish people have never failed POW’s in the past and we have faith that they will not fail them now.

Help end the prison struggle; support the Republican POWs. Political status is a right not a privilege. This issue cannot be ignored any longer, it must be dealt with and these demands must be addressed.

    POW DAY OF PROTEST HELD.

The Republican Prisoners' Action Group (RPAG) has in the past staged a series of white-line pickets, leaflet drops and protests, as well as meeting with various concerned individuals and organisations. Public meetings were also held throughout the Six Occupied Counties.

We have sought to highlight the conditions faced by Republican POWs in Maghaberry jail - a regime which the late Msgr Faul described as "inhumane" after visiting Maghaberry. Shortly before this he had received a delegation from the RPAG.

However we have endured a media blackout. Clearly it is not in the interests of London, Dublin or their hirelings for the people of Ireland to learn of the appalling conditions in which Republican POWs are held in Maghaberry jail or their ongoing resistance to the Brit policy of criminalisation.

Republican POWs in Maghaberry jail have been on protest since the June 19. They have issued five demands. These are:

    * Free association
    * Freedom of movement
    * The right to full-time education
    * Separate visiting facilities
    * The right to organise their own landings
    *
Supporters of the protesting Republican POWs in Maghaberry jail have organised and executed a number of actions on Friday, October 13 in order to increase awareness. Belfast members of the RPAG attempted to take over the offices of UTV but were prevented by the RUC/PSNI. A letter protesting the lack of coverage given to the POWs' protest was handed in to the UTV offices and read to a camera crew at the gate.

Republican POWs refuse to accept the English government's policy of criminalisation for resisting British occupation.

An RPAG picket was placed outside the gates St Andrews in Scotland to highlight the plight of the Republican POWs in Maghaberry. Whilst the enemies of Republicanism - including the Provos - are inside negotiating ways of bolstering English rule in the Six Occupied Counties, the Republican POWs continue to suffer inhumane conditions in Maghaberry. Those who signed up to the Stormont Agreement signed away political status for the POWs.

In Dublin members and supporters handed out leaflets highlighting the prison protest in the centre of the city. Other events took place throughout the country.

The Republican POWs have declared that their resolve is strong, and that all attempts at criminalisation will fail. They have undertaken 24-hour, 48-hour and 72-hour fasts, and have refused to eat in their cells since the protest began. (The cells are equipped with a toilet.) There is an onus on everybody to exert whatever influence they can to resolve the situation in Maghaberry before the prisoners' health suffers.

    Continuity not compromise!

    Political status now!

RPAG CONDEMNS ONGOING HARASSMENT OF MEMBERS.

A member of the Republican Prisoners’ Action Group (RPAG) was detained along the roadside in Newry for a period of two-and-a-half hours under the so-called "Prevention of Terrorism Act", causing himself and others travelling with him to miss a meeting which was scheduled to discuss the ongoing protest for political status in Maghaberry Gaol.

When asked whether he was under arrest, the RUC replied that he was not. However, they stated that if he left he would be placed under arrest. His place of work was also searched.

The RPAG condemns the ongoing harassment of our members by the RUC and their political masters. Such incidents will not prevent us from highlighting the plight of the Republican POWs in Maghaberry Gaol or from seeking the implementation of their five demands and the granting of full political status.

FERMANAGH PROTEST HELD IN SUPPORT OF REPUBLICAN POWs

A white-line picket was held in Newtownbutler, Co. Fermanagh, on Saturday, 23rd September. The picket was organised by the Republican Prisoners’ Action Group (RPAG), and was in support of the demands of the POWs currently on protest in Maghaberry Gaol. In spite of adverse weather conditions a large crowd turned out to demonstrate their support for the prisoners' demands.

Following the white-line picket a rally took place. The proceedings were chaired by Ruairí White from Newry – a member of the Ard-Chomhairle of Republican Sinn Féin – who introduced the National Spokesman of the RPAG and former Independent Republican councillor for Fermanagh, Tony McPhillips. Mr. McPhillips highlighted the conditions faced by the POWs in Maghaberry, adding that the situation in the gaol was hurtling towards a crisis point. The Republican POWs had just finished a 72-hour fast. He called on anyone with influence to use that influence in order to resolve the dispute.

The Cathaoirleach then introduced Fergal Moore – an Ard-Chomhairle member of Republican Sinn Féin from Co. Monaghan – who gave the main address. Mr. Moore emphasised the need for everyone to support the prisoners in their demand for political status, stating that the best way to prevent the abuse of prisoners was to restore the All-Ireland Republic. He asked those not involved in the Republican Movement to consider taking up an active role within the Movement, helping the Movement to expel the British forces of occupation from Ireland.

The proceedings concluded with the singing of Amhrán na bhFiann.

There was once again an overt RUC presence on the day. Approximately ten minutes before the demonstration was due to begin, an RUC jeep was observed departing Lisnaskea Barracks. After driving through Newtownbutler several times, the jeep took up a position to monitor the demonstration. The British colonial police remained until the conclusion of the event.

Maghaberry POWs undertake 72 hour fast.

Republican POWs in Maghaberry Gaol will commence a 72-hour fast on Tuesday, 19th September. The situation in Maghaberry has now reached crisis point. A representative of the Archbishop of Armagh met with the prisoners last Tuesday, however conditions in the gaol have not improved.

The Republican Prisoners’ Action Group has organised a picket in Newtownbutler, Co. Fermanagh, on Saturday, 23rd September at 1:30p.m. and calls on everyone to support the demands of the Republican prisoners. The RPAG has also lauched a website at URL: http://www.freewebs.com/powstatusnow

R.P.A.G. Belfast white line protest a success.

A Chara yesterday the 9th of september the Republican Prisoners Action Group held a white line protest in support of the P.O.Ws in Maghaberry Jail,
over fifty activists lined the center of the falls road handing out leaflets holding banners and selling the Republican news paperSaoirse , the response from the residents of the falls road and the traffic was outstanding ,over 2000 leaflets were distributed outlining the reasons for the Prison protest and the demands the prisoners are making .A large sum of money was also collected and over 100 copies of the Freedom press Saoirse was sold.

The speakers included a P.O.Ws Mother and the main oration was delivered by Tony Mc Phillips the Chairperson of the Republican Prisoners Action Group, Mr Mc Phillips said that todays Prisoners were fighting for the rights won for Republican Prisoners by theHungerstrikers and so cowardly sold away by so called Republicans when they signed the Good Friday Agreement, he said the P.O.Ws were steadfast in their determination to see the Protest through to its conclusion which he said would be the realisation of their demands he called on every one who claimed to be Irish Republicans to Support the Prisoners and their support group the Republican Prisoners Action Group.

A number of TV and media crews attended the protest .

Maghaberry POWs hold second 48-hour fast.

Republican POWs in Maghaberry Gaol will embark upon another 48-hour fast at Midday on Thursday 31st August.

The protesting prisoners have previously taken part in a 24-hour and a 48-hour fast. The POWs in Portlaoise will also undertake a 24-hour fast in solidarity with their comrades in Maghaberry, and protests will also continue outside the gaols in support of the prisoners' demand for full political status.

Republican Prisoners of War incarcerated in Maghaberry have been on protest since Monday 19th June.

RPAG STAGE VERY SUCCESSFUL RALLY IN LURGAN.

In spite of a large RUC presence a very large crowd turned out to support the five demands of the Republican POWs currently on protest in Maghaberry Gaol. The protest – organised by the Republican Prisoners’ Action Group (RPAG) – took place in the Edward Street area of Lurgan, County Armagh, at 2p.m. on Saturday, 19th August. The weekend also marks the 25th anniversary of the death of Mickey Devine on Hunger Strike in 1981.

A white-line picket took place on Edward Street, followed by a rally nearby. A former Independent Councillor for Fermanagh, Tony McPhillips, chaired the proceedings. He introduced Mrs. McKenna – the mother of one of the protesting prisoners from the Lurgan area – who read a statement on behalf of the POWs. Mr. McPhillips then introduced lifelong Republican Des Long from Limerick, who was the main speaker for the occasion.

Mr. Long branded the Provos "liars and hypocrites" for signing away political status under the terms of the Stormont Agreement of 1998, and seeking to criminalise the struggle for Irish freedom. He also emphasised the continuity of the prison struggle from 1981 to the present day, adding that, unfortunately, whilst English rule continues in Ireland there will continue to be prisoners. Political status remained a right and was never a privilege, said Mr. Long.

Tony McPhillips concluded by saying that "those who do not support the prisoners do not support Republicanism and they should be treated like the traitors that they are."

The proceedings closed with Brendan Magill of Lurgan singing the National Anthem, Amhrán na bhFiann.

The British colonial police harassed many of the protesters that had turned out for the event. A car was stopped by an unmarked RUC vehicle in the Church Place area of Lurgan shortly before the protest was due to begin, holding the driver for approximately 20 minutes and asking how concerned people knew him. A minibus returning from the parade was also stopped under the Road Traffic Order, with the occupants subsequently being questioned under Britain’s so-called "Terrorism Act". Backup units from the RUC’s DMSU (Divisional Mobile Support Unit) also arrived on the scene.

The RPAG will not be swayed by this harassment, however, and will continue to highlight the plight of the Republican POWs in Maghaberry Gaol.

PRISON STRUGGLE SAME AS 1981 DEATH SACRIFICE SAYS RSF.

  • The same struggle as the 1981 hunger strikes is now being waged in jails throughout the 32-Counties, a member of Republican Sinn Féin said today Saturday, August 19th.

Limerick Republican Des Long said that the failed Stormont Agreement is responsible for the current plight of Republican prisoners who are being criminalised by the political Administrations in Dublin, Belfast and London.

Speaking at a Republican prisoners’ support rally in Lurgan, County Armagh, on Saturday 19th August, Mr. Long said that the current crisis in Maghaberry prison could easily be resolved by the granting of political status.

"It gives the lie to all those who say that there is no Republican resistance to British rule in Ireland," said Mr. Long.

"In every struggle for national liberation it is recognised that the actions of the resistance arise out of the political situation and in Ireland it is no different.

"The sad fact is that ten men died on hunger strike to establish and enshrine the principle of political status and as a member of the National H-Block Committee at the time I have no hesitation in saying that today the same struggle is being waged by true Republicans who are incarcerated in jail.

"It is even more tragic for the families of the men who died on hunger strike to realise that their noble sacrifice was sold out during the negotiations for the failed Stormont Agreement – sold out by a discredited and disgraced Provisional leadership who embraced and emboldened British rule in Ireland.

"It gives me no pleasure to say this but in the eyes of the Provisional leadership; in the eyes of their political masters in London and Dublin, the men in prison today are regarded as criminals and they are being treated as criminals – however we as true Republicans must never tolerate this treatment and above all we must never accept that true Republican prisoners are criminals – they are resisting British rule in Ireland – and we are proud of them – because like us they know that the failed Stormont Agreement can never bring a real and lasting peace to Ireland.

"It is despicable that former comrades in the Provos are to the forefront of attempts to criminalise these men. It is even more disgusting that the Provos continue to condemn the continued resistance to British rule.

"Calling us ‘micro-groups without support’ may be pleasing their British masters, but the Provos cannot crush the age old aspiration to national self-determination. Just because they have sold out and taken the Queen’s Shilling does not end the struggle for Irish unity!

"The principled actions of the Republican prisoners are aimed at ensuring that they are not treated as criminals – and their demands are in line with the accepted status of political prisoners throughout the world. There are five demands and these five demands will be met – or else there will be a return to the dark days of the 1980’s when Republicans made the ultimate sacrifice in pursuit of political status.

    PROVOS SNUB MAGHABERRY POWs.

The organizers of the Hunger Strike Commemoration at Casement Park on Sunday August 13th snubbed the prisoners currently in Maghaberry Gaol and their families.

RPAG had approached the organizing committee earlier this week with a statement setting out the conditions of Republican prisoners in Maghaberry.  The organizers confirmed on Sunday morning August 13th that the statement could be read, but refused to let the mother of the prisoner read it herself.  Despite the promises when it came to the event this on Sunday afternoon no statement was read out.

RPAG is therefore asking the media to publish the statement.

Geraldine Taylor of Republican Sinn Fein said:

“The prisoners and the families are outraged at how they have been treated.  The families have shown solidarity with the families of the Hunger Strikers and believe that they have much in common.  However the sacrifice of today’s prisoners’ and their families has been virtually ignored by those organizing this event.”

STATEMENT FROM REPUBLICAN PRISONERS, MAGHABERRY GAOL

On 13th July 1981 a young boy 8 years of age was hoisted onto his uncle’s shoulders.  He was given a hammer and a black flag.  The young boy then hung the flag on the side of the coal-shed.

Around him he saw grown men openly crying, women talking and going from door to door.  The people looked tired, sorrowful and a gloominess hung in the air like a thick dense fog.  The answers to the boy’s questions didn’t really register.  “A young man from the locality had died on hunger strike”, he was told.  He had seen old people die before and there were no black flags.  “Why now?”, he wondered.  Little did he realise then, that was the beginning of his introduction to Irish politics and Irish history.

Some years later in his teenage years, the young man began reading books on Irish history and came to realise the significance and the symbolism of the black flag which he had hung years before.  He read about the struggle for political status in the H-Blocks of Long Kesh, the blanket protest, the no-wash protest and eventually the Hunger Strike which culminated in the deaths of 10 young volunteers.  He couldn’t believe the intransigence of the British as they allowed these young men died.

Now as a grown man he continues reading and believes strongly in the Republican ideology which was held dearly by those who died to achieve humane conditions for hundreds of Republican prisoners.  Are conditions today better because of the sacrifices of these men?

The young lad who 25 years ago raised a black flag to his coal-shed now lies in a British prison camp.  He too suffers the same degrading treatment.  He and his comrades suffer strip searches designed to humiliate and degrade as well as 23 hour lock ups in an 8 x 12 tomb.  They suffer sectarian abuse from loyalist staff working the landings.  They are forced to eat all their meals in their cells like caged animals.  They are denied any association with each other on the landing and are only permitted to leave their cells in 2s or 3s, accompanied by at least twice the number of prison officers.  Families are denied visits for weeks at a time due to the suspicious reaction of the prison “drugs dog” despite the fact there has not been a single find of drugs on a Republican prisoner or visitor.

Rights that are granted to the rest of the prison population are denied to Republican prisoners; education, exercise, social inter-action – basic human rights.  They are threatened with the loss of remission, or of being transported to England if they do not conform.  But they will not conform to a regime that denies them the right to be treated with dignity and humanity.  They cannot conform with institutional discrimination brought about to criminalise the Irish struggle.

That same young man and his comrades are now on protest in Maghaberry “concentration camp”.  This is a protest against criminalisation, a protest for Political Status.  They too have issued 5 demands.  Freedom of Association, Freedom of Movement, Full Time Education, Separate Visiting Facility and the right to Organise their wings.  They remain adamant in the belief that theirs is a just struggle.  They are prepared to do whatever is necessary to achieve their objectives.

They are not, as the prison authorities are trying to portray, asking for the keys to their wing.  They do not expect control of the landings.  Their demands have been reasonable, but have been ignored.

In their protest they have been refusing to eat in their cells and are refusing to co-operate with the discriminatory regime imposed upon them.  They are showing great restraint in the face of constant provocation.  Both the Church and human rights groups have pledged their assistance, but all calls for humanity have been ignored.  The prisoners, who have yet again been backed into a corner, feel that their only weapon is to fast.  There has been a series of 24 hour fasts and this week a 48 hour fast but there is still no recognition from the authorities.

That young man now experiences the intransigence for himself and asks you the people of Ireland to support the prisoners and their demands, to do all in your power to challenge this injustice, to write letters of support to your politicians, to the press and to the authorities, to show your numbers on the streets in the protests and in the pickets that are being organised across the country.

    Go raibh maith agaibh

    OC Republican Prisoners Maghaberry Gaol

STATEMENT FROM O/C REPUBLICAN POWS, MAGHABERRY.

ON August 9, the following statement was received from the O/C, Republican Prisoners, Maghaberry jail:

"On Thursday 10th August, Republican Prisoners of War held in Maghaberry Concentration Camp will hold a 48-hour fast. This is part of our ongoing protest for the restoration of Political Status and the implementation of our five demands. We will continue with our protest and in the coming weeks will step it up until the NIO and British authorities realise that we won't be beaten.

The disgraceful attitude of the POA and the prison governors in refusing to accept that their policy of criminalisation will be resisted and therefore will fail is second only to the belief held by some that Óglaigh na hÉireann can be disbanded.

Óglaigh na hÉireann is not a "patent" of any single political party. It is of the people for the people. As long as there is still British interference on Irish soil; as long as a pro-Imperialist state exists in the 26-Counties to do Britain's dirty work, there will always be those who will resist. Resistance is born out of oppression.

Those of us imprisoned in Ireland and abroad have been so because of our ideological beliefs. Our belief in the Proclamation of the Republic, declaring "the right of the people of Ireland to the ownership of Ireland..." The belief that an alien government has no right to govern nor administer the affairs of the Irish people.

The oppressive nature of the regime imposed on Republican prisoners in this camp was bound to breed resistance. It is the unfortunate belief of the British authorities that today's Republican prisoners can be criminalised and brutalised unimpeded. This is a misconception. Although we may be small in numbers, we can guarantee that we will resist at all costs.

The parallels that exist in today's campaign and that which existed in 1976-1981 are striking, although I won't pretend to know exactly what the men and women went though then. I do know that we are fighting against the same policy and we are faced with the same 'monsters'.

In 1976-1981, those courageous men and women in the H-Blocks of Long Kesh and Armagh were fighting against a more visible form of criminalisation - that of a prison uniform and being forced to work for the system. Of course those weren't the only problems.

In today's prison camps, we are fighting against a different more invisible form of criminalisation. In this establishment we don't have the convict garb, nor are we forced to work. In comparison to 1976-1981 we are more comfortably off. But criminalisation whether visible or invisible must be resisted. The fact that this establishment is intent on forcing us to accept policies of controlled movement, no free association for Republican prisoners, and forcing our families to do without visits for weeks on end. The fact that we are locked in cells for up to 22 hours, the fact that we are denied all handicraft facilities and limited education is all that is available. Education which clashes with association - as a result one or the other must be forfeited. This is an exact throwback to the years 1976-1981.

Why shouldn't we be given the freedom to move freely on our own landings during periods of unlock? Why should we forfeit education for a period of exercise? Why shouldn't we be allowed to clear our own wings? Why shouldn't we expect to see our families on a weekly basis? Why shouldn't we be allowed to make handicrafts or souvenirs?

Why shouldn't we? All of the above are widely available to ordinary prisoners. And indeed they would be available to ourselves if we conformed. This we won't do. We will not renounce our principles nor will we allow ourselves to be bribed by a corrupt, sectarian prison establishment.

Our demands, which are widely available to ordinary prisoners proves that we are not being elitist. We are not asking to be treated differently, but to be treated with dignity and respect.

We have never asked for the keys of the wing nor would we. We do not expect control of the landings nor do we expect the screws to leave their positions.

We have been totally reasonable in our repeated requests to be treated equally and fairly. The fact that the British have ignored our pleas should be challenged by all right thinking people in Ireland and abroad.

The protest which has been forced upon us by British intransigence could be sorted out at the stroke of a pen, if only these people came to realise that we are only asking for what is already available.

We hereby ask that all politicians, north and south; all clergymen and women; the people of Ireland and abroad, and all those who have suffered years of degradation at the hands of the British 'monsters' support us by supporting our demands. We ask you to write letters of support, denouncing the current policies in newspapers and to British politicians.

We ask you to support those who are defenceless.

    RPAG CONDEMNS SNIFFER DOG TORTURE

The Republican Prisoners’ Action Group views with deep concern the continuing abuse of the passive drugs ("sniffer") dog in Maghaberry Gaol. In light of the fact that no drugs have ever been discovered either amongst Republican prisoners or their visitors, it is clear that this measure is simply punitive in nature.

It has been brought to our attention that two Republican POWs have been denied open visits due to alleged "detections" by the dog. One of the prisoners has been refused visits every second week, whereas the other prisoner has been denied his last three visits – by different family members. The end result of this harassment is that he has not received a visit for over a month.

The RPAG believes that this amounts to nothing less than psychological torture of the POWs. We reiterate our call for the removal of the so-called "drugs" dog, and for the concession of the protesting prisoners’ five demands.

MEETING WITH CAJ 'POSITIVE' - RPAG

The Republican Prisoners’ Action Group (RPAG) met with the Committee on the Administration of Justice (CAJ) on Thursday, July 27th. The RPAG outlined the demands of the protesting Republican POWs in Maghaberry, as well as the current conditions the prisoners are facing. The CAJ were also made aware of our concerns with regard to the minimal nature of the review of the segregated regime. Those conducting the review did not recommend any movement on what we had identified as the key issues in submissions to various human rights bodies.

The RPAG feels that the meeting with the CAJ was very positive, and are satisfied that they will continue to monitor the situation in Maghaberry.

FACTS ABOUT REPUBLICAN PRISONERS AT MAGHABERRY GAOL.

    • Thirty-eight Republican Prisoners currently imprisoned in Maghaberry Gaol.
    • "Controlled movement" is imposed on Republican landings with only three prisoners permitted out of their cells on the landing at any one time with each prisoners accompanied by two prison officers. Free Association on landings completely removed.
    • Legislation introduced by British government following the Good Friday Agreement removed the right of Republican prisoners to organise themselves on their own landings and removed the right of Republican prisoners to spend their time in prison constructively.
    • Prisoners made to chose between daily exercise or education. Prisoners denied educational facilities to enable them to organise their own education.
    • Easter lilies banned in the prison. Other Republican handicrafts confiscated and destroyed by prison officers.
    • PSNI/RUC approval required before prisoners permitted on Republican landing.
    • Republican prisoners’ parole entitlement has been reduced to half that of other prisoners.
    • Denial of compassionate paroles for family and religious occasions. Parole for funerals of immediate family members often restricted to 6 hours or less.
    • Constant use of strip searching to humiliate prisoners contrary to international law. One prisoner received 31 strip searches and 1,135 rub down searches in a six month period.
    • Prisoners locked in their cells for alternately 21/23 hours per day.
    • Abuse of the sniffer dogs in an attempt to criminalise political prisoners. Families and prisoners are wrongly accused of smuggling drugs into the prison. Familes are forced to have closed family visits which take place through Perspex screen while prisoners returning from parole are placed in solitary confinement for 48 hours.
    • Family visitors exposed to Loyalist visitors while visiting prison. Prisoners exposed to Loyalists going to and from legal visits.
    • The power of the Governor to punish a prisoner by taking away remission was reintroduced specifically for Republican prisoners after it was banned by the European Court of Human Rights in 2002.
    • Access to a doctor available only once a week.
    • Interference with correspondence.
    • Irish language and cultural items including handicrafts made relating to hunger strikes confiscated or destroyed by prison officers.

POLITICAL STATUS IS A RIGHT NOT A PRIVILEGE

    PRISON FAST.

On Friday 14th July 2006 Republican POW’s both in Maghaberry and Portlaoise will hold a 24hour fast in protest against the regime in Maghaberry and the attempts to criminalise Republican Prisoners by enforcing sub-standard conditions on the segregated landings.

Republican POW’s in Maghaberry have been engaged in a prison protest since 19th June 2006 and there are now over thirty POW’s on the protest.  They are fighting to improve conditions for segregated prisoners in Maghaberry who are in effect being punished for exercising their right to segregation from non-political prisoners.  They are demanding that their 5 demands be addressed.

    1. RIGHT TO FREE ASSOCIATION
    2. END TO CONTROLLED MOVEMENT
    3. RIGHT TO FULL TIME EDUCATION
    4. SEPARATE VISITING FACILITY
    5. RIGHT TO ORGANISE OUR OWN LANDINGS

POW’s in Portlaoise have been acting in solidarity with their comrades in Maghaberry during the prison protest and 19 POW’s in Portlaoise will also be fasting on Friday.

The Republican Prisoners Action Group (RPAG) have been highlighting the worsening conditions that have existed since the implementation of segregation but our concerns were ignored by the prison service and others.  This has led to POW’s themselves embarking on a protest as they felt that this was the only avenue left open to them.  This issue cannot be ignored any longer, it must be dealt with and these demands must be addressed.

    RPAG Statement - 13th July, 2006

PLIGHT OF REPUBLICAN PRISONERS HIGHLIGHTED INBELFAST.

ON Saturday, July 8 a very successful white-line picket was held on the Falls Road, Belfast, outside the Republican Sinn Féin offices.

Over thirty prisoners are currently refusing to eat food in their cells in protest at the unsanitary conditions - the cells also incorporate a lavatory.

Republicans from Belfast as well as the nine counties of Ulster and from other parts of Ireland took part in the picket, following which a short public meeting took place. The picket got a great reception from the general public for the prisoners' campaign.

The public meeting was chaired by Brendan Magill, Lurgan who said a few words and introduced Des Dalton, Vice-President, Republican Sinn Féin who said:

"As we approach the end of the first decade of the 21st century the same struggle engaged in by Bobby Sands and his nine comrades in the H Blocks of Long Kesh is again being played out in Maghaberry prison. 25 years ago today Joe McDonnell became the fifth man to die on hunger strike. In that momentous year of 1981 ten men were to die on hunger strike to vindicate the right of all Republican prisoners to political status. Since 1917 22 Irish Republican prisoners have sacrificed their lives to deny Britain's attempt to criminalise the struggle for Irish freedom. Today Irish Republican prisoners are taking on the latest attempt by the British government to criminalise them and their cause.

"This prison struggle is not a recent phenomenon but is one almost as old as the Republican Movement itself. Criminalisation of Irish Republican prisoners has over a long period been used by the British Government to discredit in the eyes of the world the Irish people's fight for freedom. If they can show that Irish Republican prisoners are criminals, then by extension their cause is also criminal using this logic.

"This latest attempt to criminalise the Republican struggle is unique in Irish history in that in this instance the policy of criminalisation has been endorsed by those who would describe themselves as Irish nationalists and republicans. The various commemorations of the 25th anniversary of the H-Block hunger strikes by those who signed up to the criminalisation of Irish Republican prisoners with the signing of the Stormont Agreement in 1998 is an act of sickening hypocrisy.

The conditions being endured by the prisoners in Maghberry are hellish, the British prison service in this instance are not content to criminalise the prisoners but are also attempting to criminalise the prisoner's families. All of this is set out in this month's edition of SAOIRSE.

Republican Sinn Fein is calling on people to support the work of CABHAIR in raising funds for the support of the prisoner's families. We are also calling on people to support the campaign of the Irish Republican Action Group(RPAG) by join pickets such as today, leafleting, writing letters to the papers etc.

Twenty-five years on from that tragic and heroic year of 1981 we cannot leave another group of Irish Republican prisoners to take on the British government on their own.

    INCREASED NUMBERS ON PRISON PROTEST.

From this week the number of Segregated POW’s in Maghaberry engaged in the Prison Protest is set to increase.  No attempts have been made to address the 5 Demands of the POW’s although the RPAG have reported these demands on numerous occasions.

    1. FREE ASSOCIATION
    2. END TO CONTROLLED MOVEMENT
    3. RIGHT TO FULL TIME EDUCATION
    4. SEPARATE VISITING FACILITY
    5. RIGHT TO ORGANISE OUR OWN LANDINGS

The Prison Protest will continue until these demands are addressed and the necessary changes are implemented.  The media are censoring the ongoing struggle in Maghaberry and the prison service are ignoring it, despite this, support for the POW’s and their demands is growing.  This situation cannot continue and POW’s are determined that this situation will be resolved once and for all.  The implementation of Segregation was not a meaningful attempt to deal with the issue of Political Prisoners it was a political move made in 2003 to trick the Irish people into believing that the conditions that led to protests within the prison at that time had been improved and that the issues had been resolved.  Since Segregation conditions for both POW’s and their visitors have worsened.

The POW’s are relying on the Irish people to stand with them in their fight to improve conditions and ultimately to win back Political Status.  The Irish people have never failed POW’s in the past and we have faith that they will not fail them now.

    28 Meitheamh / June 2006

IN A statement on June 28 Republican Sinn Féin, Belfast said that in 2006 Irish Republicans were still incarcerated for their political beliefs.

The statement continued: In 1981 ten brave men died for the fight for political status. Twenty-five years later the fight still goes on. Today Republican prisoners have once again found it necessary to resort to prison protest.

We urge all Republicans to support the prisoners in their struggle to gain back the right to be treated as POWs. These men are prisoners of war and deserve to be treated as such.

    • 1981: They were political prisoners then
    • 2006: They are political prisoners now.

Help end the prison struggle; support the Republican POWs. Political status is a right not a privilege.

We like to call on all ex-prisoners' group to come out and show their support for all political prisoners who are on protest in Maghaberry Concentration Camp. We ask them to join in white-line pickets and any other protest organised by the Republican Prisoners Action Group and Republican Sinn Féin.

We need everyone to show their support -- come to the white-line picket and support the prison protest.

    PROTEST CONTINUES IN MAGHABERRY.

On Monday 26th June 2006 Republican POW’s in Maghaberry will begin the second phase of their Prison Protest and will be refusing to eat meals in their cells. The RPAG would like to stress that the POW’s are not on Hunger Strike.

POW’s on the Segregated wing are denied access to canteen facilities and are forced to eat meals in their cells in close proximity to the toilet.

This is a practical problem that we believe results from the policy of Controlled Movement enforced on the Segregated landing.  This policy prevents any more than three prisoners being allowed out of their cells at any one time and requires a staff to prisoner ratio of 4:2 and 3:1.  The RPAG consider that the policy of Controlled Movement is excessively restrictive and POW’s will not tolerate these conditions any longer.

The Prison Protest began on Monday 19th June 2006 and will continue until the five demands outlined by the POW’s are addressed.

    FREE ASSOCIATION

    END TO CONTROLLED MOVEMENT

    RIGHT TO FULL TIME EDUCATION

    SEPARATE VISITING FACILITY

RIGHT TO ORGANISE OUR OWN LANDINGS

POW’s in Portlaoise Prison have expressed support for the Prison Protest and will begin a 24hour fast on Wednesday 28th June in solidarity with their comrades in Maghaberry. They have indicated that this will continue each week for the foreseeable future and in a statement issued from Portlaoise have called for support for the POW’s in Maghaberry in their fight to win back Political Status.

    REPUBLICAN PRISONERS ACTION GROUP STATEMENT

    Monday 26th June 2006

    CURRENT CONDITIONS IN MAGHEBERRY PRISON.

by RPAG - Republican Prisoners Action Group

Lock-ins: Republican POWs are subjected to up to 23-hours' lock-up on a "bad day". There is what is known as the "good day, bad day" policy operating within the prison.

Strip-searches and rub-downs: the screws have prisoners strip the clothes from the top of their bodies before being searched, and are again searched after replacing their clothes and stripping the bottom half of their body. Seemingly this is an attempt to deny that strip-searches occur within
Maghaberry Gaol as EU legislation defines them as full-body searches with all clothes removed at the one time. (One prisoner was searched a total of eleven times in one day. These included strip searches.) Lack of access to solicitors and legal representation: prisoners have been searched on their way to and from legal visits, and in some instances made to miss the visit altogether.

No free association: Lack of educational opportunities - these are available to other prisoners. New restrictions on parole and compassionate parole: the draconian conditions placed on them have led to many prisoners refusing parole.

Misuse of sniffer dogs to prevent visits and refusal of open visits. Despite passing some visitors, the dogs have been brought past them again and made to sit. This can prevent a visit from taking place. Another tactic is to offer an "open" visit, which most prisoners will not accept.

Internment by remand: there are a growing number of cases whereby people have been remanded in custody for many months before being granted bail or acquitted. They may be refused bail on the grounds of forensic evidence connecting them to the charges - however the forensic reports show that no such evidence exists.

It is clear that the British government is attempting to criminalise Republican prisoners and by extension the struggle for Irish freedom, as evidenced by the signing away of political status under the terms of the 1998 Stormont Agreement. They are seeking to destroy the prisoners - both mentally and physically. POWs have been subjected to sleep-deprivation and other methods. However history shows that oppression inevitably results in increased resistance.

We also find it ironic that others who have argued constantly that there are no longer any political prisoners in Ireland should call a public meeting to discuss the issues facing prisoners in Maghaberry. These are of course the selfsame people who were only too happy to sign away political status for anyone convicted of a "scheduled offence" after the Stormont Agreement came into operation. Ten men died during the Hunger Strike of 1981 to restore this right - a right that did not belong to those who sought to remove it.

Despite the much publicized reintroduction of segregation (or "separation" as the British now call it), prisoners can be refused entry to the segregated wing on the basis of RUC or prison authority opinion that they are not qualifying prisoners. The former head of the British prison service, John Steele, proposed that segregation be reintroduced, as it was necessary to ensure the Health & Safety of prisoners. As such the perception of these prisoners by other inmates is of far greater importance than the perceptions of the RUC/PSNI and/or Prison Service staff. If pro-British and Loyalist prisoners believe them to be Republican or nationalist then their safety is clearly in jeopardy and therefore they should be admitted into segregated accommodation.

We unreservedly support the aims of Republican prisoners for the granting of full political status, which they are entitled to as of right, as well as their struggle to end British Occupation and restore the All-Ireland Republic so that Irishmen and Irishwomen can finally be free from all foreign interference.

STATEMENT FROM OC CIRA POWS IN MAGHABERRY.

We the Republican POWs call on all nationalist, Republican people of Ireland and abroad to support us in our upcoming protest for better conditions and the restoration of political status. In 2003 we embarked on a protest for segregation, this battle was won and segregation was introduced in September of that year. At that time the Brits asked for a period of transition and conditions would then improve. These terms were accepted reluctantly by Republicans.

However as in 1980 when our comrades in the H-Blocks of Long Kesh ended their first hunger-strike, we have found that the Brits are still incapable of honouring their promises. As a result we again find ourselves in the unfortunate position of having to embark on a prolonged protest. This has come about as a direct result of the intransigence of the Brits in seeking a policy of criminalisation. We hereby state that we as Republican POWs will no longer co-operate with nor accept the policies and regime imposed on us by Brit puppets.

We have outlined our five demands. The protest which we now embark upon will not end until our demands are met. We will take whatever steps are necessary in order to improve the conditions not alone for ourselves, but also for those who may come behind us. I would therefore like to call on all Republican bodies, all politicians to back us in our plight. We have exhausted all avenues open to us. We gave the Brits the transition period required by them and still they refuse to accept that we are not criminals. We would ask everyone to support us by supporting our representatives on white-line pickets and leaflet hand-outs taking to the streets and demand that the Brits and their prison service sort this out once and for all.

RSF SUPPORTS PROTEST ACTION BY PRISONERS IN MAGHABERRY.

Statement by Ruairi O Bradaigh, President, Republican Sinn Fein

Republican Sinn Fein declares its support for the protest action of the Republican prisoners in Maghaberry Prison, Co Antrim commenced on June 19.

In this 25th anniversary year of the H-Block hunger strike, the British government must not be allowed to go back down the road of attempting to criminalise Republicans while they treat them in an inhumane manner.

In addition to 21 and 23 hour lock-up on alternate days there are constant strip searches. Prisoners are made to choose between daily exercise and education. They are denied facilities to enable them to organise their own education.

The prisoners seek the right to free association on their own landings and an end to "controlled movement". They are abused by the use of sniffer dogs to harass their visitors and themselves.

Safe and secure visits are denied, Family visitors are exposed to loyalist visitors and the prisoners themselves are exposed to loyalists while going to and from legal visits.

Since Republican prisoners secured separation from loyalist and ordinary prisoners some years ago, they have been targeted for special reduced conditions. The mistakes of the past must not be repeated in 2006.

RPAG STATEMENT - PRISON PROTEST BEGINS.

    PRISON PROTEST BEGINS

    Monday 19th June

On Monday 19th June Republican POW’s began a protest action in Maghaberry, this is the first in a series of protests planned by Republican POW’s in the gaol.  POW’s are making clear that they will not accept the sub standard conditions on the segregated wing, they will not be criminalised nor will they be intimidated or coerced by the petty restrictions being imposed by prison screws to make the day to day life in the gaol for POW’s more difficult.

Political Status has been denied to Republican POW’s since the implementation of the Good Friday Agreement and as a result conditions both for POW’s and their families and visitors have worsened considerably.  The Republican Prisoners Action Group (RPAG) was formed to highlight the conditions faced by POW’s and we have met with the Human Rights Commission who accepted that our concerns were justified.  Monsignor Faul, at our request also visited the gaol and spoke with the OC, he issued a report strongly criticising the regime and the conditions in which POW’s are forced to exist.  The British Inspectorate for Prisons issued a Report in October 2005 that was also critical of a number of practices within the Segregated Regime in Maghaberry and yet the Prison Service have done nothing to adequately address these concerns.

The RPAG contributed a submission to the consultation process for the Separated Regime Review conducted by the Prison Service.  In their ‘Summary of Responses to Consultation of the Review of the Separated Regime’ the Prison Service clearly indicated that they had identified the sources of concern of those who had contributed, however they failed to address any of these issues in a productive way.  The main issues of contention of those who contributed were:

    1. Searching
    2. The passive drugs dog
    3. The daily regime
    4. Controlled movement.

In relation to searching prisoners it was reported that the number of rub down searches would be reduced, however the report also referred to plans to build a facility for ‘private searches’ ie. Strip searches that will be sited within access of the circle areas in Bush and Roe Houses (the Segregated wings).

The use of the passive drugs dog is not to be changed in any way that will benefit prisoners or facilitate the maintaining of regular family visits.  Minor changes have been made that do not alter the present system in any recognisable way and the issue of prison staff abusing their control of the dog to prevent visits to POW’s in the segregated wing and to put POW’s in punishment cells on their return from Leave have not been addressed at all.

Instead of altering what is a sub-standard daily regime that requires POW’s to choose between exercise and education and enforces 18hour and 22hour lock-up on alternate days the prison service have plans to implement a Two-Tier regime.  This is entirely unacceptable to Republican POW’s who are not seeking to earn privileges from the Northern Ireland Prison Service but are demanding their rights as Political Prisoners.

The review indicates that Controlled movement will not be changed and insists that it is necessary, the RPAG strongly refute this assertion.  Controlled movement is excessively restrictive and prevents any free association between POW’s.

The POW’s are not prepared to accept these conditions and feel that the RPAG have exhausted all avenues on their behalf to no avail.  The RPAG call on the public to give their support to the POW’s at this time. The Hunger Strikers sacrificed themselves to improve conditions for those POW’s who came after them and to ensure that Political Status was available to POW’s as of RIGHT.  No one can be justified in signing away the Rights of others, however that is what happened in the Good Friday Agreement, and POW’s are now in a position where they must begin the fight for Political Status again.

Republican POW’s have formulated five demands and call for these to be addressed immediately.

    1. FREE ASSOCIATION
    2. FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT
    3. RIGHT TO FULL TIME EDUCATION
    4. SEPARATE VISITING FACILITY
    5. RIGHT TO ORGANISE OUR OWN LANDINGS

The British Government, the Prison Service, the media and local politicians have all been well aware of these issues for some time and have done nothing to address them.  The POW’s have been left with no choice but to engage in protest within the gaol and this protest will no doubt intensify if these issues are not addressed and their demands are not dealt with.

The POW’s are relying on the Irish people to stand with them in their fight to improve conditions and ultimately to win back Political Status.  The Irish people have never failed POW’s in the past and we have faith that they will not fail them now.
